İLEF Dergisi is a peer-reviewed journal in the field of communication research and media studies. It seeks to reflect the variety of intellectual traditions and multidisciplinary approaches to provide a free and critical platform for scholars. It is an open access journal, published biannually both in printed and on-line versions by Faculty of Communication at Ankara University; the oldest institute in the field of communication in Turkey and in the surrounding region.


İLEF Dergisi encourages contributions in areas such as the conjunctions of class, gender, ethnicity and sexuality in audiovisual culture, conventional and new medias, histories and theories of journalism, film, television, video, and digital media; and politically engaged approaches to a range of media practices.


Ilef Dergisi is indexed in Clarivate Analytics, ESCI (Emerging Sources Citation Index) and ULAKBIM, TR Index.

Submission Rules & Publishing Process

  1. The submitted manuscript is assessed by the journal editor for an initial decision. If the manuscript is regarded as suitable for the journal, then it is sent to two peer-reviewers competent in the relevant field of study, providing the anonymity of the author.
  2. Peer-reviews are archived for two years. If only one of the peer-reviews are positive, the manuscript can be sent to a third peer-reviewer, or a final decision can be made by the editorial board regarding the peer-reviews.
  3.  The manuscript should be no more than 8000 words including the citations and the bibliography.
  4.  An abstract consisting of at most 150 words and 5 keywords in English and Turkish should also be provided with the manuscript.
  5.  The contact information, the ORCID identifier and a short biography of the author should be submitted in addition to the manuscript.
  6. Any indication that could expose the identity of the author should be avoided.
  7.  Submissions should be attached to a mail including the name of the author, the name of the article and a one-sentence summary of the manuscript.

  9.  All citations should be made using Chicago-Style 16th Edition: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html.
  10.  The titles and section-headings in the manuscript should be brief and clear.
  11.  The manuscript should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 pt with double-spacing. The endnotes should be in Times New Roman, 9 pt with single-spacing. The manuscript should be sent in .doc or .docx formatted files.
  12. The main title of the manuscript should be written in capital bold letters. The section-headings should be written in bold letters with only the first letters of the words capitalized.
  13.  If quotations have more than 40 words, a block quotation should be used. The quotation should begin on a new line and it should be indent 1 cm. from the left margin. The entire quotation should be 11pt with single-spacing.
  14.  The source should be indicated below the cited table/figure.
  15. The author is asked for a final approval prior to publication.
  16.  A printed copy of the journal is sent to authors.
  17.  Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements can be accepted for evaluation only after necessary changes are made.

Publication Ethics

Editorial Responsibilities


The Editors are accountable for everything they publish and have sole responsibility for the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript. They may confer with reviewers or editorial board members when making publication decisions. Articles are considered and accepted on their academic merit

The editors and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers and the publisher, as appropriate.

Unbiased consideration should be given to each manuscript, judging each on its merits without regard to the race, religion, nationality, sex, political philosophy, seniority, or institutional affiliation of the author.

Submissions from authors with whom the editors have a conflict of interest will be assessed by a member of the Editorial Board. Submissions by members of the Editorial Board will be assigned to an Associate or Guest Editor to ensure a fair and appropriate process.

At least one reviewer for each manuscript should be in no relation with Faculty of Communication. Faculty of Communication members should not review submissions by associate faculty members.


Publisher Responsibilities


ILEF Dergisi is published by Faculty of Communication, Ankara University (ILEF). On Behalf of ILEF, The Faculty Dean is the owner and executive editor of ILEF Dergisi. The Journal’s editorial board is comprised of members biannually proposed by each department under Faculty of Communication.

The relationship between the ILEF Dergisi editors and the publisher Faculty of Communication, Ankara University is firmly based on the principle of editorial independence.

Faculty of Communication, Ankara University protects the intellectual copyright of ILEF Dergisi,  its imprints, authors and publishing partners by promoting, and maintaining each article’s published version of record.

Ethical Guidelines for Authors and Reviewers

Authors’ Responsibilities


  • Submissions to ILEF Journal should be original and free from any form of plagiarism,
  • It should be ensured that the submitted manuscript is not published earlier elsewhere or it is submitted only in one journal at a time for publication,
  • Authors should avoid sexist or discriminatory language,
  • Any potential or apparent conflict of interest, -including the funds or grants received- should be clearly acknowledged,
  • Manuscripts should not infringe any third party’s rights of privacy or intellectual property rights,
  • Authors are responsible to acknowledge all individuals who contributed to their work; those who have contributed significantly to the research should be listed as co-authors and authors should seek for permission of all co-authors for submission,
  • It must be acknowledged if a previous version of the manuscript was published elsewhere,
  • It is authors’ responsibility to obtain permission for all illustrations and quotations that go beyond “fair use,” as defined by current copyright law.


Reviewers’ Responsibilities


  • Reviewers should provide a just and unbiased evaluation of the manuscript,
  • Maintain the confidentiality required by the blind reviewing process,
  • Notify the journal editor in case of any real or potential cases of plagiarism, multiple publications or ongoing submissions,
  • Notify the journal editor of any ethical concerns about the manuscript,
  • Decline the invitation to review if there is any conflict of interest.
  • In cases where reviewers are unable to assess the manuscript, the editor would welcome suggestions of alternative reviewers who may be able to assess the manuscript.

Manuscript Guidelines

The submitted manuscripts should comply with Chicago Style Citation format (16th edition, http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html) Notes and Bibliography system. The in-text notes and citations should be indicated with numbered endnotes. The first citation of a source should be indicated with full reference record, while shortened versions are to be used for the following references to the same source.
